Knitted Winter Hat

A swirling diagonal pattern in warm earthy tones, topped with a big pom-pom.

Hand-knitted winter hat in warm brown tones with a pom-pom, laid on a yellow background

Materials

  • Chunky-weight variegated yarn in brown, rust, and copper tones (~150g)
  • 6mm circular needles (40cm cable) and a set of DPNs for the crown
  • Stitch markers
  • Pom-pom maker (or two cardboard rings)
  • Yarn needle and scissors

The process

The hat is knitted in the round from the brim up. I cast on using a long-tail method and worked a 2×2 ribbed brim (knit 2, purl 2) for about 5cm — enough to fold up or wear flat.

The body uses a simple diagonal rib pattern: offset the knit/purl columns by one stitch every few rounds, and the stripes naturally spiral around the hat. The variegated yarn amplifies the effect beautifully, adding shifting color along the diagonal lines.

For the crown, I switched to double-pointed needles and worked evenly-spaced decreases every other round until only a few stitches remained, then threaded the yarn tail through and pulled tight. The pom-pom was made separately using a pom-pom maker and trimmed into a round shape before being tied securely through the crown.

Tips & lessons learned

  • Chunky yarn knits up fast — a hat like this takes just one evening.
  • The diagonal pattern is self-correcting: if you lose your place just look at the fabric and match the slant.
  • Make the pom-pom extra full — trim it generously and it will shrink more than you expect.
  • Secure the pom-pom with a doubled yarn tail tied through the hat and knotted on the inside.
