Crochet Orange Keychain

A flat orange slice with rhinestone seeds and a crocheted leaf.

Crocheted orange slice keychain with rhinestones and a green leaf

Materials

  • Orange and white cotton yarn (size 10 or similar fine weight)
  • Green cotton yarn for the leaf
  • 2.5mm crochet hook
  • 5–6 small rhinestone crystals
  • Silver lobster clasp and keyring
  • Polyester fiberfill (a small pinch for slight padding)
  • Yarn needle, scissors, fabric glue for the rhinestones

The process

The orange slice is worked as two flat panels — a front and a back — crocheted in the round and then sewn together with a little stuffing inside to give it a gentle, slightly padded feel.

For the front panel I started with the white centre: a magic ring, then several rounds of single crochet increasing outward. I switched to orange for the outer rind section and added a row of slip stitches along the inner boundary to create the segment lines you see in a real orange slice. The back panel is simply a plain orange semicircle.

Once both panels were joined, I crocheted the leaf separately in green and attached it at the top alongside the hardware. The little rhinestones were glued on last using fabric glue to mimic the glistening seeds.

Tips & lessons learned

  • Fine cotton yarn gives much crisper definition than acrylic for small detailed pieces like this.
  • Use a smaller hook than recommended — a tighter stitch keeps the shape firm.
  • Let the fabric glue cure fully (24h) before handling, or the rhinestones will shift.
  • Attach the hardware before sewing the two panels together — much easier to access.
